For Ashitaka, it seemed a strange path of thought to doggedly keep to a line of history that eventually lead to something wrong enough to require them to be here in the first place. To him, he wonders if deviation would be for the best. But COST assured them that it was not, that that was what the Regency sought out and what endangered them all, so he tentatively believed them. He didn't have the knowledge or the understanding to do anything but do what they commanded, regardless of what he wished.
