A king is one of the people, even if he's the first among them. That makes for small choice.

[Says the man who was quite ready to sacrifice himself to an army of dead men and their masters if it meant a chance for the survival of as many of the living as possible. Now -- he's willing to fight, but less resigned to dying.

That goes to why he spoke of his concern for Daenerys today to begin with. This all means the most if they both survive it.]

I don't think there would be much point in trying to convince you to do something you knew for sure you didn't want to do, but only you can decide what that is.

and what if he isnt? what if the king is not merely human, but something far greater? a pure existence, with the blood of a dragon and the mind of a sharpened blade, standing head and shoulders above the common man.

my father was all of those things. and yet the people followed me, because i seemed more human to them. in that case, they have no right to complain if i act as selfishly as they did. livestock have no business dictating the choices of kings.

That's the story of a king, especially after a great king is gone. Sometimes even after a poor one is gone.

But what good is a king if there's no one to follow him? Just a man standing around crowing about how great he is, or not even that.

People aren't livestock. They're people. But there's something to be said for the fact that they followed you. They must have seen something in you, at least for a while.

yeah. they saw a chance to get what they wanted. my father gave his life for the people, but a chance for more power had them following someone who despised the lot of them. they thought my rebellion was for them, when it was only ever for myself.

thats why humans are mere livestock. offer them a piece of meat, and theyll blindly forget about their old master in a heartbeat. thousands died because of me, and i crushed thousands more without care. but even so, i wont go out of my way to kill them. thats the only reason im here at all.
