Dogs and cats were rare. And as a soldier, we weren't allowed them regardless. The only animals we took care of were horses. If I had to say, I'd guess that anyone starved and desperate might have eaten a dog or two, but I wasn't one of them.

but spiracorns kind of look like the kelpies here, if the kelpies had a pair of really big horns that spiral around each other and SUCK when they're aimed at you

You could call it "Earth." The easiest comparison I can make would be to say it was a time not unlike what we faced in Gallipoli. In that respect at least, I can say it was familiar. But it was in that alone. I'd never served as an infantryman the way I did there.
