By now, you may have noticed some among your number missing. I can assure you they are being well taken care of with what supplies we have in this time of war.

Our struggle here is drawing to a close. I presume both sides would like to avoid further loss of life. The Empire-- the Regency, as you call us-- certainly would. I myself grow weary of slaughter, especially this senseless murder of my soldiers.

This can be ended. I do not have the credentials necessary to surrender. You do. Call off this useless struggle. Your people will be returned to you.

Of course, if you have questions, I beg you to ask them while we have the time. This transference into your network will not last for long.

[ooc Discuss surrender here! Threadjacking welcome.]

[There's a picture, direct to you from Yoshitsugu's eyes, of his own little gachapon; tanuki in... some kinds of interesting outfit.]

Isn't it interesting that they talk to me in what sounds like the voice of Tokugawa Ieyasu? The man who is, was and will be shōgun of Japan, depending on when and where you come from, speaking delightfully nonsense prophecies in a poor attempt at an ominous voice. My dear partner is going to be rather upset about this.

But I can't fault their feel for the flow, even if their subject matter is not as useful as one might hope from an oracle. Just yesterday I was warned I would trip over and hit the pointed edge of a table and it happened only an hour later. Apparently a coughing fit would ruin a touching moment and it did. Most recently I have been informed that a friend will ruin the last piece of mochi I have. Which one of you will be the culprit?

Still, if you can defy the prophecy, I wouldn't mind a friend having a good treat before we leave for this troubling mission. If you have not experienced war before you would be wise to come to those of us who have if you find yourself struggling whilst we are on duty; being stubborn about carrying the burden yourself will do you and nobody else any good.

We have a few matters to discuss, and not as much time as I'd like for each of them, as often is the case. I hoped to give you more time to recover but the Watcher wants the next dance to start, so dance we must.

To begin. We have final confirmation on when we will be heading too, if not where. Enough that we are comfortable to begin your training. Late 1916 Earth, it looks like. Which... for those of you that are not familiar, is in the middle of the First World War. We aren't sure which Front yet, we hope for confirmation in the next few weeks so that we may brief you fully. But that can come later. For now, your orders are to report to Sergeant Chiron. He, Special Operative Young and I will see to your training. Report tomorrow morning 0600 to begin.

Secondly, as to the matter of rank. Seems many of you have never been in an army before to know these rules or have had your memories erased. To which we are still working to find out the direct cause of.

I am Commander Grothia, previously of the Regent's special division, defected. I oversee this contingent of COST, which there are many and we number only one amongst.

2IC is Sergent Chiron, Centaur, formerly the trainer of Grecian Heroes. Many of you have met him so far, he has 5000 years worth of history in that head of his. Use it as frequently as you can, I certainly do.

Lastly, there is Special Operative Young, whom you have all met. By that, I mean the crows. Yes, all of them are one woman. Stop feeding her, she'll get too fat to fly again.

They both answer to me, as you do. When I am not present, orders are to come from Chiron, when he is not present, it defers to Young. Likewise, I overrule any of their commands.

Unless special circumstances dictate it, I am the only one who enters the field with you. I will not dictate your every move, you are all far too capable for that. But let me be understood:

In the field, if I give an order, I expect it to be followed. If you have issues with that order, you may bring it to me - privately. I will always hear you. But if you openly question me in the field and get others killed for your insubordination? I will not hesitate in what I have to do to save lives.

To the final matter, and in regards to that. I know many of you found the work in France distasteful, getting the King and Queen killed for being hapless fools. I know it seemed extreme to just leave them to their fate.

But let me be clear if you interfere and change history as much as some of you might have by what you think is saving lives? I will leave you in the next plague-ridden field we find ourselves in. It is not single person's choice to dictate these events. Take France. Some of you have never seen or heard of Earth, but for others - those events are what birthed their whole new world. You would deny them that because you could not stomach what must be done? Mourn privately if you would, I will not say it is easy or fair or kind. But I will not tolerate such selfishness in my unit.

That is all. All operatives please acknowledge within the next 12 hours.

For the curious, we have finally found the source of the coolant shortages.

You may have noticed a certain oddity with your dreams as of late, and a greater and greater difficulty in waking from them. I can confirm that you have regrettably-- and entirely accidentally-- stumbled into the dreams of your neighbors and comrades. To those whose privacy has been invaded: we ask for your understanding and kindness. This was the fault of no member of COST.

A trans-dimensional creature known as the Oneiroi, the Telpharan, or more commonly, shapers, have invaded our ship. Colonies of the creature are known to invade ships and BASE models, consuming coolant while distracting their enemies with dreams and visions. These creatures currently live in our walls.

[Attached is an image of a rather exasperated Commander Grothia, flanked by several DACTYL droids, standing before a hole ripped in the wall of BASE's many hallways. She holds a shaper up to the camera, while several DACTYL droids chase more of the creatures escaping out of the walls behind her.]

I have been studying the creatures, and reading up on what histories and zoological studies have been written about them. Debate rages over their sentience-- some believe them to be pests. Others think them intelligent, sentient, sapient creatures who, while incapable of spoken language, communicate nonetheless through the language of dreaming. It is believed by some that the choices they make, of whose dreams to invade, whose to link, and how those connections are made, are an attempt to welcome other sentient creatures into their colonies, to make connections and be understood.

Debate has also continued amongst your command on how to best handle these creatures. Because their intelligence and self awareness is currently unknown, debated even now in scientific communities across the multiverse, we are ourselves unsure how to best deal with this problem. We leave it up to you.

In two days time, I shall put up a poll on the BCE network, and I encourage all to vote in favor of how these creatures should be dealt with: eradication, or (as my comrade has termed it) catch-and-release. Both posit their own risks: the possibility of a mass slaughter of sentient lifeforms, or the possibility of a resurgence of this infection. For myself, I shall not argue with the results, or argue either side. It is your choice to make, my poor fellow-soldiers.

For now: I ask you to consider the matter carefully. You may, of course, ask me any questions you like. I encourage you to debate this matter as thuroughly as you are able.

And in two days' time, I urge you: vote.

[ooc Yep, let's talk about the shaper infection. Characters can ICly debate here (threadjacking encouraged!); there will be an IC vote on the 19th, with results on the 21st. Ask any OOC questions you might have over here.]

While the trial leaves us waiting I have a small request for anyone who's willing.

I've never seen a city quite like Paris. I'm curious about its architecture. The unrest has made a close study of what it boasts difficult in person so I want to take advantage of our BCEs.

If you come across an interesting building or element of construction before we leave, please consider sending me a picture. Obviously I'm not asking anyone to go out of their way, especially not into danger.

That's all.

With our mission in Paris just about at its limit, I have a few questions to posit to you all. This isn't quite my thing, and I don't mean to sound high and mighty, but you have all piqued my interest.

Firstly, the ideas of liberty and self-government were, indeed, revolutionary at this point in time. They're run of the mill for some, and to others they are representative of an ideal rarely achieved in their own world. I speak this of course to all of us, members of this response team. Do you agree with this revolution? Which is more right, the government of a king, or of a nation's people?

Second, to those whose plans have been a part of the mission, what went through your minds during the planning process? Or during its execution.
[ He does not...see the irony behind this phrasing. ] Having failed the mission directives, do you feel in part responsible for whatever consequences arise? I say this both to those that were successful, and those that were not.

And lastly, given the state of affairs, this hardly matters much. It's more of a personal question. Do you think you are free?

I’ve got my hands on some historically important documents. To my understanding, they should be in circulation by now, but they’re not. Whatever’s going on with these deviations means we have to take care of it ourselves.

I’m having them copied by locals for the sake of authenticity.
[You know, “locals”. Also it was recommended that 76 not try to engage a printing press.] I can cover some of the cost, but this needs to get done as quickly and efficiently as possible. If anyone’s got some spare cash, or you want to throw some papers around, you’d be helping to set things back on track.

Don’t have much to offer in return.
[Clearly throwing around historically important documents is its own reward.] You want an IOU, that’s fine. If you need to brush up on your hand-to-hand or haven’t figured out how to fire a gun yet, I can give you some pointers, provided you can keep up.

Looks like Sergeant Gramps is gettin' a little finicky that some stuff hasn't gone down. I got an idea on how to introduce the king to the guillotine. Anyone wanna start a riot with me to kick it off?

Basically, I got this list of VIPs who frequent the bar I work at, right? Turns out, a few of these boneheads are some serious players. All we gotta do is get into a fight of king supporters vs revolutionaries and inspire 'em to start writing some charges up. Who's in?

I usually reserve these communications for private networks, but it seems necessity has hastened our meeting. For the safety of myself and my family, I would be of no uncertain gratefulness if you would refer to me as Sargent, and little else. Though I am sure, with time, some of you will come up with more colorful nicknames.

Pleasantries aside; welcome, new faces and old, and I must ask this with all seriousness and kindness: What have you done?

Things are moving at the wrong speed. The prognosticators were not expecting to compensate for such a load. Several droids have begun misfiring, our protochron readouts are gaining sentience, a prophet is missing, and the birds are growing increasingly agitated. This is not the series of events your ancestors knew, much less my progeny.

To put it simply: things are not moving apace. I cannot say for sure if this is your influence, or the influence of an outside power, or perhaps both. And yet:

Mary Wollstonecraft, who was not supposed to enter Paris until next month, is already here.

The King's Trial has not even been proposed by the revolutionary government.

Mirabeau sleeps still in a place of honor.

I will put more work into discovering the source of this snarl in history. But you must be warned: every action you have here changes the lives of untold million not yet born. Tread carefully, for as the poets say: you walk upon dreams.

I may be completely alone in this, but is anyone else disturbed by the alarming dearth of rebel archivests?

Fortunately it seems that the number of books outnumber the actual people who wish to burn them which is rather fortunate because some of these things I can actually read. The Malleus Maleficarum is actually quite a facinating read if you're interested in the true barbarism of this world.

Malleus refers to a hammer and Maleficarum is the plural of Maleficar which refers to one who is wicked or depraved. In this sense it seems to loosely translate as Hammer of Witches...I laughed admittedly.

I'm certain it would be Hammer of Mages where I come from, but that is completely apart from the point.

Apparently these people believed that magic was some sort of delusion of the mind precipitated by demonic seduction through visions and dreams. They blamed the most rudimentary of problems on people, captured them, tortured them into fraudulent admissions, and then killed them.

The magic and spells they discuss are not even real magic, not as I know it anyway...unless one considers mathematics, philosophy, and general enlightenment magical.

I suppose I would define magic as the ability to expend mana...or putting it more simply, the ability to burn my accuser's face off by willing primal fire into being.

And here I thought the Southern Circles were bestial. Flaying someone alive for anomalous intelligengence, very dyed-in-the-wool dedication to the extermination of magic...and that there could be a book devoted to the finding and killing these so-called magic users.

It's certainly telling, not completely unfamiliar either. I'm certain the Southern Chantry has their own step-by-step process for teasing out mages and spiriting them away to the Circles.

Anyone else getting a massive wave of culture shock? It's totally kicking my ass right now. I got a nice little gig set up here above a bar, but the catch is I gotta work. But yeah, people are coming and going like crazy around here. Weird outfits, weird hairstyles. Seeing everyone go crazy about freedom is pretty freakin' cool. Nobody needs some stuffy old dude sittin' in a golden high chair sucking his royal thumb and giving out orders all the time.

Not gonna lie, I've seen some pretty big palaces before, but I totally wanna raid the hell out of Versailles.

So anyway, is it like this all the time when you guys get a new mission? I've never been to Paris before, but I kinda know what it looks like from pictures back in my own time? Universe? Good luck getting your head around that shit, it's way too deep for me. I was all excited to see the Eiffel Tower, but apparently it's not gonna exist for like... a hundred years.

I can see that COST has many in its ranks that have perfected the art of spying. You would make perfect ninja with your finely honed skills.

I have been gathering as much information about COST and the Regency as possible and pondering the implications of this 'time travel' but I'm not going to overshare until I am as certain as I can be about what I have learned. Right now we have little choice but to get on with the mission we have been assigned; complain all you like but that won't change. One thing I would like to echo from the commander, however, is this: do not use your real name in public. It's not a command but if you want to risk our delightful enemies finding out who you are and possibly how to get rid of you that's your decision.

They are prepared to kill their own for the sake of their war, if you could call what they did to the spy killing. You won't be spared if they think you a threat.

I have a small amount of money I have set aside for the needs of our forces but it's not going to put a nice roof over your heads so that's up to you to figure out. If you are really struggling to find enough to eat, however, I can help you. I would suggest finding work as I have but the current state of this city is making that harder by the day; the flow leads towards blood and violence. Try your best to survive and not die, though if you do? Feel free to come over and say hi. I'll be sure to do the same.

For those of you willing to share information, I have a few questions.

Are any of you from this world? Does what we do here mean something to you?

Has anyone been with this cause long enough to see worlds other than this one?

I am led to believe there are those who recall agreeing to this. If you did, what proof compelled you?

If I've seen it, then all of you have seen our enemy's artillery. We're outgunned if we do nothing.

I have a plan. It's not much of one, and it's risky, but if we take out some of their cannons then it will improve our chances of victory. With all this rain they should be easy for me to freeze, and once frozen, they'll be easy to shatter. We can ruin any gunpowder they keep close by too.

The problem is that as soon as one cannon is destroyed, our enemy will know to defend the rest that much better. From that point on it's only a matter of time until it becomes an impossible task. I want to take out as many as we can before then.

So I'm looking for some cannon killers.

My location is set to public. If you're willing to help, come and join me.

Some of you have made it. Some of you didn't. Some of you seem to be transferred without your memories intact again, and I am not sure I know hide nor hair of you. I cannot assist with that at present, but I note your frustrations. I thought we would have time to transfer to base, but it wasn't being... cooperative at this time, and new orders came through that we were needed.

I believe I promised some answers, now is the time. Official time lines state that we aren't due to meet up with the forces of the time period for another few hours, so if you have any pressing concerns whilst you prepare: now is the time to air them.

As for myself, I am Commander Grothia of the Colonies in Opposition, or COST by other names, operating to curb the reign Auspicious Regency of Ever Lasting Peace.

And again: don't go showing your BCE off to every local villager. I sent Da'ud back with another crew, he should be safe and sound with his family, now, for those of you that thought that killing wasn't a viable option.

Welcome to France, soldiers.
